Edward Weston (1886 - 1958) :

Edward Weston was born on March 24, 1886, in Highland Park. Weston's father gave him his camera at age 16, he began photography in the early 1920's and they formed into paintings. In 1923, he traveled to Mexico, where he opened a photographic studio. In 1926, Weston returned to the United States, settling in California, where he continued his love for art creating nudes, close-ups, natural forms and landscapes, among several other works. Weston died in California, on January 1, 1958.

Artwork:

This art piece entitled 'Two Shells' is a photograph taken by Weston in 1927 and printed with gelatin silver print by Cole Weston.
Like its brother this photograph entitled 'Shell' was taken in 1927 and Cole Weston created a perfect print of it using the same silver print as before.
In 1930 this photograph was taken and entitled 'Winter Squash'. It was then printed in 1980 by Cole Weston.
This piece of photography entitled 'Succulent' was taken in 1932 by Edward Weston and printed in 1946 by Cole Weston.
This final piece of Natural Form photography was created in 1930 by E. Weston and printed in the 1980's by C.Weston using the same silver paint previously used on all of the other prints created.

Karl Blossfeldt (1865 - 1932) :

Information on Blossfeldt:

Blossfeldt was born in Germany in 1865. He was a sculptor's apprentice; after studying painting and sculpture on a scholarship at the School of the Royal Museum of Arts and Crafts in Berlin from 1884 to 1891, he worked in Italy, Greece, and North Africa collecting plant specimens. From 1898 to 1931 he was a professor in the sculpture of living plants at a College of Arts and Crafts in Berlin. In 1899, he began to photograph plant forms with a home made camera. Blossfeldt's photographs were made with a homemade camera that could magnify the subject up to thirty times its actual size. By doing so he revealed extraordinary details within the natural structure of the plants. In the process he created some of the most innovative photographic work of his time. The simple yet expressive forms captured on film affirmed his boundless ability. Indeed, his pictures influenced many architects and artists of his time, who used Blossfeldt's forms on scales as small as ornamental ironwork and as large as the shapes of entire buildings.

Artwork:

This piece of art photography taken and printed in the early 1900's. It is entitled 'Dutch Hyacinth'. It was printed using the finest ink and paper.
An art piece made in the early 1900's. Entitled 'Monk's Hood'.
Printed using the finest pigmented inks on heavyweight German paper made from 100% cotton and natural spring water. Hand finished.
The following piece of art work was also taken around the same time and printed onto the same paper using the same ink. This piece is entitled ' Bear's Breech'.

It is obvious to anyone that Blossfeldt
was a fan of using German heavyweight
paper and the finest pigmented ink as
this piece entitled 'Miss Wilmott's Ghost'
was following in the pattern of the
previous pieces.

I could not find the name for this piece however it is still one of Karl Blossfeldt's photography pieces of a plant. It was taken around the early 1900's like the others using the same materials.
This is another Natural Form photograph and print from Blossfeldt and was taken and printed in the 1900's. This piece is entitled 'Shield Fern'.

The 'Adiantum Pedatum, Hair Fern' is a high-quality printing that gives a vivid and sharp appearance. Produced on medium weight cover stock, this art reproduction is coated with a silken finish that protects the inks and creates an elegant look.

Natural Forms

Natural Forms are photographs, paintings, drawings and prints of natural substances; such as nature, for example flowers. Many artists have made themselves well known by creating amazing artwork out of natural forms. For example Karl Blossfeldt made himself well known by taking photographs of plant form. The following posts will show you artists and some examples of their work with explanations of when and how it was created; as well as what it is (if it is not completely clear).
